I’d like to give a quick warning as this post may be a bit of a downer, but I think it's important to talk about the potential impacts that our government can have on us and the planet as a whole. President Biden just approved the Willow Project, a $7 billion (BILLION!) oil drilling initiative in Alaska. Oil drilling is a common practice around the world, with many countries relying on oil production as a major contributor to their economy. While oil drilling brings energy production and job creation, it also has significant effects on the environment, human health, and the economy.
Environmental Effects
One of the most significant risks of drilling is the potential for oil spills, which can pollute water sources and harm marine life. Spills aren’t the only potential issue, drilling operations can also contribute to air pollution through the release of greenhouse gases and other harmful emissions. These emissions have an IMMEDIATE impact on air quality but also contribute to long-term climate change, which can have severe consequences for the environment and human health.
Oil drilling can lead to the destruction of natural habitats and biodiversity loss. Drilling sites often require the clearing of large areas of land, which can disrupt ecosystems and displace wildlife. This destruction of habitats can have far-reaching consequences, including the loss of endangered species and the disruption of vital ecological processes. Water contamination is also a potential risk, the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, for example, released an estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil into the ocean, causing significant environmental damage and loss of wildlife. Oil drilling also contributes to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, which can cause climate change and harm human health.
Human Health Effects
Oil drilling poses a serious threat to people's health, especially those who reside near drilling sites or work in the oil industry. The toxic chemicals utilized in drilling processes can pollute air, soil, and water sources, leading to a variety of health issues. Exposure to these chemicals is associated with respiratory problems, skin irritation, headaches, and nausea. Moreover, several of these substances are recognized carcinogens, which means they can induce cancer. Prolonged exposure to these chemicals can also result in neurological damage, birth abnormalities, and other severe health complications.
Economic Effects
Oil drilling can have a significant impact on the economy, both positive and negative. While it can create jobs and contribute to economic growth, it can also lead to economic instability due to fluctuations in oil prices. Countries that rely heavily on oil production can experience significant economic shocks when prices fall, and they may be vulnerable to political instability and conflict.

I know everything above sounds a bit scary and doom and gloom but never fear! The fight to stop the WIllow Project is far from over. Many activists are coming together to stop the project before it starts. We need to pressure our politicians and convince them to explore alternative energy sources and technologies to reduce our dependence on oil and mitigate its negative impacts on our planet. Project Willow has been approved but the fight is not over. I encourage everyone to listen to the experts that are speaking out against this and other similar projects and use your voice to stand up for what you believe.
